where VCs go to market

VC Marketing: The Hot Take This Week

What can an analysis of the 2023 and 2024 Midas List tell us about our own marketing strategies?

A lot. Milltown Partners releases a report on this subject annually, and the data is interesting, to say the least. It’s a weird time to be in VC. Raising a fund, getting in on the best deals, securing a full time role- all of it is more competitive than ever.

One lever you can always pull to stand out is your own personal brand. Let’s look at some stats from each report.

2023 Midas List Analysis

  • 51: The number of VCs on the 2023 Midas List who appeared on a podcast. The most popular choice at the time was 20VC, where 12 Midas List investors appeared.

  • 47: The number of Midas List VCs who were not active on X at all. See my previous post on this topic. I’ve really had it with Elon Musk’s rhetoric, but that’s neither here nor there when looking at the data.

  • 90%: Of the 2023 Midas List investors, only 10% don’t have a presence on Linkedin. I’m super curious about that. Who are you? Show yourselves, I want to know what your marketing strategy is. Not surprisingly, new entrants to the Midas List were more likely to be active on Linkedin than those they replaced.

2024 Midas List Analysis

  • 35%: The number of Midas firms that produced “marquee content”. This type of content includes designated microsites, comprehensive primary-research driven reports, and bespoke benchmarking tools. See: Index Ventures and Pear Ventures.

  • 38%: The number of Midas list VCs who were on a podcast last year. Of those, the median number of appearances was two. Plus, there’s a new Midas favorite podcast in town: Turpentine VC. The strategy behind Turpentine is something that will deserve it’s own post, eventually.

  • 55%: The number of Midas VCs that are posting on Linkedin at minimum once per month (up from 51% last year).

  • 100%: The number of Brink list VCs posting at least monthly on Linkedin.

Everyone knows I’m Linkedin’s biggest fangirl, and the last two stats from the 2024 analysis are the reason why. Linkedin is a vehicle for your personal brand, and the data shows that the VCs rising to the top are using it.
